What do Hawaiian canoe
paddlers and Tesoro have in common? A friend named Alan Gustavson, president
of Goose’s Edge Inc.
Among its substantial business holdings, Goose’s
Edge operates three Tesoro gasoline stations in Hawaii: Queen Ka‘ahumanu
Tesoro in Kailua-Kona on the Big Island, Dairy Road Tesoro on Maui, and the
Waipio Tesoro on Oahu.
Captain Al, as he is known to his friends and
family, also believes in perpetuating the cultural sport of Hawaiian canoe
paddling. Goose’s Edge co-sponsors two major canoe regattas annually: the
Hawaii Canoe Racing Association (HCRA) State Championships Regatta on Maui
and the Queen Lili‘uokalani Canoe Regatta on the island of Hawaii.
Above all, Captain Al is an outstanding marketer and salesman.
“The
best buying experience 24/7” is the company’s motto. Consider that Goose’s
Edge was once named the top retail company in the country by Tesoro’s Best
Brands Program. In addition, the company has made Hawaii Business Magazine’s
list of best places to work.
From embroidered Tesoro treasure burst
logos on baseball caps, to flying the Tesoro flag on his fishing boat, to
the bumper sticker on his truck that reads, ‘I (heart) Tesoro,’ Captain Al
promotes his stores and the Tesoro brand with a passion.
“I like
working with the company,” Captain Al said, “and I enjoy promoting the
brand.”
Always there to service Captain Al’s needs are Bob Mills,
Tesoro’s VP of wholesale marketing for California and Hawaii, and his team,
Hawaii Wholesale Marketing Manager Gordon Wong and Assistant Area Marketing
Manager Jane Baron.
“What Al and his family do for the local
community and the Tesoro brand exceeds anything I’ve seen in my 40 years in
the business,” noted Bob. “Tesoro is so fortunate to have the Gustavsons
representing us in Hawaii.”
Captain Al invited Bob and his team to
the Big Island Labor Day weekend to partake in a Hawaiian canoe dedication
ceremony before the start of the annual Queen Lili‘uokalani Canoe Regatta.
Goose’s Edge donated a new outrigger canoe to the Kai O‘pua Canoe Club,
which hosts the regatta each year. The “Queen K Tesoro” canoe was decked out
in bright Tesoro logos and colors from stem to stern, drawing crowds of
onlookers while on display.
“A new canoe can easily run about
$70,000,” explained the canoe club’s president, Lawrence “Uncle Bo” Campos.
This year marked the 40th anniversary of the Queen Lili‘uokalani
Canoe Regatta, which was named in honor of Hawaii’s last monarch. The event
drew 180 men’s canoe teams, another 140 women’s teams, and about 10,000
spectators to the Kona Coast. Racing footage will be aired on cable
television for a month following the event, and featured by a Hawaii-based
international airline as part of its in-flight programming to the delight of
thousands of travelers.

Goose's Edge Inc. has
aquired TOP SHAPE MARINE SERVICES. We are open for business August 1st 2011.
